The city of Bastogne, a key road junction and major logistics center, was one of the main targets of the strategic plan. The Belgian city and its surroundings were surrounded by German forces, effectively isolating a large number of American troops in the pocket. These units resisted numerous enemy attacks for several days under adverse weather and natural conditions. The resistance of the 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles" was legendary. On December 26, the encirclement was lifted by a counterattack by several armored divisions of the US Third Army under the command of General George Smith Patton.
