Ferdinand, respectively Sd.Kfz. 184, was a heavy tank destroyer developed and mass-produced by the Porsche company and used by the German army during World War II. His name became a synonym for any tank destroyer in the eyes of Red Army soldiers. It was deployed for the first time in 1943 on the Eastern Front, and because it showed certain shortcomings, the surviving machines were withdrawn from the front after the Battle of Kursk and subjected to reconstruction. The improved variant of the machine was then given the new name Elefant.
