Sopwith Camel was a British fighter aircraft manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company and used in World War I and shortly after. The best-known versions of this aircraft are the Sopwith F.1 Camel and Sopwith Camel 2F.1.
Sopwith F.1 Camel was created as a replacement for the already inadequate fighter Sopwith Pup (Puppy). In the early stages of its development it was known as Big Pup (Great Wall), the first flight of the prototype took place in December of 1916. He was armed with two synchronized Vickers machine guns firing 7.7 mm lafetovanými on the back of the fuselage in front of the flight deck. Due to the characteristic "hump", kryjícímu conclusions guns, the new machine was called Camel (Camel). The first were assigned to operational units in May 1917, and in July was attended first battles. During the war produced approximately 5500 pieces.
