Template information
The Avro 683 Lancaster was a four-engine bomber used by the British Royal Air Force during World War II. It was one of the most important types to serve in the RAF during the war and formed the backbone of British Bomber Command in the second half of the war (arguably replacing the Vickers Wellington in this capacity). It was first deployed in combat in 1942, as the last of a trio of British heavy four-engine bombers serving in Bomber Command (alongside the Short Stirling and Handley Page Halifax types).
During the war, it was deployed almost exclusively as a heavy bomber, within Bomber Command (during the war it was never used in combat outside the British Isles, it remained only in the armament of Bomber Command, one of the Home Commands, i.e. the so-called "Home Commands").
