Template information
The Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing is an American biplane with an atypical (negative) offset wing (the lower wing is more forward than the upper wing) that first flew in 1932. In the mid-1930s, Beech made several major design changes, creating model D17 Staggerwing.
This originally civilian aircraft was also used by the army, in a number of countries. At the beginning of World War II, the need for a small and powerful courier aircraft became apparent, so in 1942 the United States Army Air Force ordered the first of 270 machines for service in the United States and overseas.
The military machines were designated UC-43 and differed from commercial aircraft only in minor details. The US government also purchased or leased aircraft from private owners. There were 118 for the Army Air Force, with more machines for the United States Navy to follow.
