Template information

The M1 Abrams tank was officially adopted by the US Army in 1980. It was significantly different from its predecessors from World War II. Its main weapon was, like the M60 tank, a 105 mm cannon. A gas turbine was chosen to drive the armor, and the use of active armor was a novelty.

The development of the tank took quite a long time, however, the possibility of gradual modernization was kept in mind from the very beginning. In 1984, the M1A1 version was armed with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon. The M1A1HA variant was improved by using depleted uranium armor to increase crew safety.

Another modernization resulted in the M1A2 version, which was equipped with a special information system (IVIS) and infrared camera (CITV), as well as a new commander's turret and new periscopes. The M1A1HA and M1A2 tanks played a significant role in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they were used by ground forces as well as the US Marine Corps.
