Template information
Sakawa was a Japanese light cruiser launched in April 1944. It was the fourth and last of the Agano-class cruisers.
The Japanese focused on high top speed and a powerful torpedo armament when designing the ship. The light cruiser Sakawa did not see action in the Pacific. In April 1945, she was to participate in the suicide operation Ten-Go, along with her twin sister Yahagi, but was forced to remain in port due to fuel shortages.
After the Japanese surrender, the cruiser Sakawa was taken over by the Americans, who used her as a target ship for nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. Sakawa sank on June 2, 1946.
