Template information
The Sturmgeschütz III (also referred to as the StuG III, Sd.Kfz.142) was a German assault gun built on the Panzer III tank chassis. It is the most significant modification of this tank and the unrivaled most widespread type of German heavy armored vehicles from the Second World War, which was deployed throughout the conflict. Versions A to E were armed with a 7.5 cm KwK 37 cannon. Their task was to support attacking infantry. The StuG III Ausf.B was equipped with a short 75mm L24 cannon mounted directly to the hull.
The advantage of this solution was (thanks to the absence of a rotating tower) a very low construction. The machine was powered by a 230 horsepower Maybach HL 120 TRM engine. It could boast a maximum speed of up to 40 km/h. The Ausf.B took part in the fighting in the Balkans in April 1941 and Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. The simple design saved costs and mass production was very easy. This made the StuG III one of the most widespread German armored vehicles. In total, approximately 10,000 machines were produced.
